The Power of Education

I was recently moved by a facebook post about a young Malawian man called William Kamkwamba. After having to leave school due to a severe famine in the area which meant his family couldn't afford the $80 annual school fees, William embarked on a journey of self-education. He borrowed library books from his former primary school and taught himself how to build a windmill out of junk and bring power to his village. He then built a second, larger windmill to power irrigation pumps and carried on making huge improvements to the lives of the people in his village.

GETA was founded to support the work of Fr Paul Bigirwa in Uganda, where he helped to set up St Theresa’s Nursery and Primary School.. Fr Paul is currently in the UK until 6th September on a “working visit” to St Monica's Church in Palmers Green. As always, Fr Paul is an inspiration wherever he goes and the Faith Sharing Groups at St Monica's are pleased to have the opportunity to support Fr Paul's work through GETA.

Book Sale after 10.30 Mass on 17th July

Amount raised
£275.50

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to this very successful event. The total is made up of £67 from sales, £168 from donations and £40.50 from Gift Aid on eligible donations. This last amount highlights the benefit of increasing the value of donations with donors not having to pay any more - the extra comes at the rate of 25% from HMRC - the Tax Collection service - and is very much appreciated.

How to help support the Children at St Theresa's school

Since the inception of GETA in 2015, the team in association with the support of the Lenten project at St Margaret's parish, Twickenham, has managed to raise over £5,000 to support the running of the school.  These funds will be put towards acquiring additional teaching staff, completing the building work and decoration of the classrooms & school buildings, paying off the loan for the school van - the list is endless.

Dearest Brothers and sisters,

Greetings and best regards from Uganda and from STNPS. We are proud to be associated with you and the school is increasingly gaining ground. We thank you so much for your selfless commitment in soliciting the necessary help to the institution.

We are having an emergency meeting with the parents and teachers today because we have been overwhelmed by the numbers.

GETA is now a Charity

Thu, 26/05/2016 - 9:42pm

GETA was formed in June 2015 as a Charitable Trust. The Trustees are pleased to announce that, as a result of the dedicated work of the Management Team and the generosity of all our donors and supporters, GETA is now formally recognised by the Charity Commission as Charity no. 1167092.

On behalf of GETA, Fr Paul Bigirwa, and all the children and staff of St Theresa's School I would like to thank each and every one of you for making this happy development possible. With your continued support we look forward to sharing the joys of future fundraising events with our whole community.

“A day at the Races”

Amount raised
£990.00

Not the Marx Brothers film, but the Salomon Richmond 13.1 race on Sunday 3rd April, starting at Old Deer Park in Richmond. A crisp dry start just after 8.30 turned into a warm dry day – just the perfect running conditions for David, Catherine and Brett to successfully finish the half-marathon; at times it was a question of which might give out first, the lungs or the legs, especially dodging the muddy puddles on the towpaths! It was a hugely rewarding – if at times painful – experience, but we kept going and crossed the finishing line with good personal times.
